Tens of billions of dollars are donated to nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) such as Save the Children, Compassion International, and World Vision, but how do we know what kinds of approaches are actually effective in reducing global poverty? Which NGOs are humanitarian and which are self-serving? Bruce Wydick will explore these questions using recent evidence from leading development economists, explaining how we can channel donations to truly make a difference in the lives of the global poor.
Bruce Wydick is a professor of economics and international studies at the University of San Francisco, research affiliate at the Center for Effective Global Action at the University of California at Berkeley, and the author of Shrewd Samaritan. His research in the use of econometric tools to evaluate international development organizations has appeared in leading economic journals, books and the media.
