The Commonwealth Club Welcomes the Club’s 12th Decade

At 110 Embarcadero

Groundbreaking for the Commonwealth Club’s New Headquarters

Wednesday, 3:30pm June 11, 2014

(San Francisco- June 10, 2014)  The Commonwealth Club of California is ready to break ground and invites you to join us on June 11th at 3:30 pm in commemorating a historic first for The Club. Since its inception in 1903, the Club has been an integral institution in San Francisco, a place to advance discussion and public discourse, debate ideas of civic importance, and share visions of what our communities can be. Throughout the 111 years that the Club has promoted this dialogue, however, it has never owned its own headquarters. That is about to change.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee will join Former Secretary of State, the Honorable George Shultz, and San Francisco Chief of Protocol Charlotte Mailliard Shultz to celebrate the groundbreaking for the Club’s new headquarters. Members of the Club’s Board of Governors and donors to its building campaign, including Anna Mok, managing partner at Deloitte, Tad Taube, President of the Taube Family Philanthropies, John Farmer, retired general partner at Goldman Sachs, Maryles Casto, founder and CEO of Casto, The Travel Company and Jed York, president and CEO of the San Francisco 49ers and other community leaders, will be on hand to celebrate.

Text Box: Credit: LMSThe Building: The Club has been working with architects at Leddy, Maytum, Stacy to design a headquarters that will be functional for the Club’s activities, continue the historic significance of the Embarcadero, and be environmentally sustainable. The Club’s LEED Gold or Platinum building will feature an innovative ventilation system that will utilize Bay air for cooling. The main auditorium and lobby will feature reclaimed wood from the current structure. In addition to auditorium spaces, the building will have multiple gathering spots for members and the community, a roof garden and terrace that overlooks the Bay, and an informative and interactive digital media presence throughout the building.

The Club anticipates opening its doors at 110 The Embarcadero in mid-2015.
