In Bethany McLean's latest book, Saudi America: The Truth About Fracking and How It’s Changing the World, she explores the past, present and future of fracking in America. She tells the stories of many who have had stakes in the industry, including Aubrey McClendon, pioneer in fracking and founder of Chesapeake Energy, whose accidental death in 2016 brought up questions about a string of faulty economics and debt that began to catch up with him. 

McLean finds that as stakes get higher and the fossil fuel industry becomes more attractive to some, its promised returns have yet to come through, leading us all to ask: What's next for fossil fuels? Is this the end of the shale revolution, or is the money just beginning to come in?
