Climate One at Harvard: John Holdren and Gina McCarthy

With the Green New Deal in the national spotlight, a vigorous debate is happening: How ambitiously and broadly must the United States act on climate? Are issues such as economic equity, job security and public health outside the frame of climate action—or are they fundamental to its success?

Progressive Democrats contend a holistic solution would tackle all of the above. Critics such as former Representative Barney Frank (D–MA) argue that society can only handle so much change at once. How bold does action need to be to avoid the worst impacts of climate change—and at what cost to citizens? Are environmental justice and human health central to the success of the climate action, or are they just a nice bonus? How can policy and innovation work together to decarbonize the economy?
