Reading Californians Book Discussion: Orphan Bachelors
From the bestselling and award-winning author of novels Bone and Steer Toward Rock, Fae Myenne Ng’s Orphan Bachelors is an extraordinary memoir of her beloved San Francisco’s Chinatown and of a family building a life in a country bent on their exclusion.
Ms. Ng will join us to discuss her 2023 California Book Award gold medal nonfiction book. Orphan bachelors was the term used for single Chinese men who came to the United States and were not allowed to have wives, whether through the lack of Chinese women available or through miscegenation laws. Though this book is one family's story, it represents the history of many Chinese families who ended up in San Francisco's Chinatown.
