The State of Global Security: A Conversation with Michael Nacht

Michael Nacht and Rose Gottemoeller will discuss the past, present and future of global security. Amid resurgent nuclear risks, including concerns raised by Russia's war in Ukraine and the escalating crisis over the Taiwan Straits, the discussion—and Michael Nacht's deep expertise—is as urgent as it is important.

Our speakers will draw on their considerable experience and knowledge. Michael Nacht is the Schneider Chair Emeritus and Professor of the Graduate School. He is a noted scholar of U.S. national security policy who has held leadership positions in academia and government. He was a member of the directing staff of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government (1973–1983), arguably the most prominent U.S. academically based research center on science, technology and public policy. He was dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Affairs (1986–1994). And he served as dean of the UC Berkeley Goldman School (1998–2008) when the school first received the ranking as the nation's number one graduate school of public policy analysis by US News and World Report.

Rose Gottemoeller is the Steven C. Házy Lecturer at Stanford University's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and its Center for International Security and Cooperation. Before joining Stanford, Gottemoeller was the deputy secretary general of NATO from 2016 to 2019, where she helped to drive forward NATO’s adaptation to new security challenges in Europe and in the fight against terrorism. Prior to NATO, she served for nearly five years as the under secretary for arms control and international security at the U.S. Department of State, advising the secretary of state on arms control, nonproliferation and political-military affairs. While assistant secretary of state for arms control, verification and compliance in 2009 and 2010, she was the chief U.S. negotiator of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) with the Russian Federation.
